RARE VARIATION!!!... We at Memory Lane are proud to offer this Highest Graded Variation card of Legendary Hall of Famer, Christy Mathewson from the 1911 T205 series. This variation relates to the T205 gold border Christy Mathewson "Cycle Cigarette" card. All "Cycle Back" Mathewson cards depicts the legendary hurler having a single loss during the 1908 season, inadvertently omitting a "1" since "Matty" actually lost 11 games in 1908. While PSA previously included all "Cycle" Mathewson's within the total T205 Mathewson count, the grading company recently created a separate category for the Mathewson Cycle variation.
This PSA EX 5.5+ is the highest graded specimen, and one of only three examples now indicated under this new Cycle variation category, with the second highest at a PSA 3 VG level. There are certainly other T205 Cycle Mathewson's included in the significant number of standard T205 Mathewson graded copies. Regardless, most hobby experts agree that this "Cycle 1 loss" Mathewson merits distinction as one of the "top 5" variations within the prestigious T205 gold border set. Mathewson's 373 wins, 3 shutouts in the 1905 World Series, and "Christian Gentleman" persona have forever earned him status as one of our national Pastime's greatest pitchers.
