(LOT 2)
Barry Halper Photo Collection with Ruth, Gehrig, Shocker and more Autographs
Barry Halper's Collection of 90 Different Original Yankee Photographs 48 taken of the 1926 team at Spring Training and the rest circa 1934-1941 with many autographed! Here are two different original collections that Halper combined and organized handsomely in a custom made book. The cover says it all in engraved gold lettering: "New York-Yankees" and "Collection of Barry Halper." Mounted first within the covers is an original newspaper photo of a man in a wheel chair in front of Babe Ruth's casket.
The August 18, 1948 New York Journal-American caption reads: "AN OLD FRIEND CALLS—Bob Fountain, a paralytic of 352 E. 139th St. Bronx an old friend who had his picture taken with Babe Ruth, in 1934, the Babe's last playing year with the Yanks, pays his last respects to the Great Man of Baseball. As Bob was wheeled past, he sobbed: ‘Babe, Goodbye, Babe, Gee!'" The article is followed by no less than forty-two original photos (30 signed with a total of 37 signatures including those displaying two player autographs) all taken at Yankee Stadium on the field with Bob Fountain in his wheel-chair posing with one or two Yankee players. The photos vary in size with most measuring 3.75"x6" and include two copies of the aforementioned one with Ruth (one signed), as well as two photos with Gehrig—one from 1934 (signed) and one taken in September of 1939 showing Bob with a smiling "Iron Horse" who is already visibly gaunt from the affects of his terminal illness.
Additional photos with Bob include images of: Joe DiMaggio (three/two signed), Lefty Gomez (three/two signed), Tony Lazzeri (signed), Bill Dickey (signed), Chas. ["Red"] Ruffing (three/two signed), Joe Gordon (two/both signed including one with a rookie Phil Rizzuto), Phil Rizzuto (two/both signed), Red Rolfe (signed), Tom Henrich (two/one signed), Charlie Keller (two/one signed), Ben Chapman (signed), Frank Crosetti (two/both signed), Jake Powell (signed), Atley Donald (signed), George Selkirk (signed), Art Jorgens (signed), Buddy Rosar (signed), Bill Knickerbocker (signed), Oral Hildebrand (signed), Spurg ["Spud"] Chandler (signed), Babe Dahlgren (signed), Johnny Murphy (two/one signed), Monte Pearson (signed), Marius Russo (signed), Marv Breuer (signed), Frenchy Bordagaray (signed), Jerry Priddy (signed). Others unsigned include: Jimmie Deshong, Johnny Sturm, Johnny Lindell, and Art Fletcher. There is also a group of mounted vintage Yankee team photos which originate from Baseball Magazine.
The second part of Halper's book displays 46 original photos (mostly 2.5"x3.5") taken of the (to be world champion) 1926 Yankees training in Florida during March of that year and include many members who would be part of the famed 1927 squad, too (noted by a preceding asterisk *).
